The difference between paraffin wax and soy wax candles

As someone who has burned scented candles for many years, I remained blissfully unaware of the dangers associated with buying cheaper candles. I am a huge fan of any scented candle, however as the years went on it became more important to have a strong lasting smell. I began to pay more for stronger scented candles that last longer, still not bothering to check what I was burning.

Once I began to research scented candles with a view to starting my own candle company, it quickly became apparent that there are huge health issues associated with scented candles. This primarily comes down to the types of wax that are used as there are many waxes available on the market: paraffin wax, soy wax, beeswax….  So my question was – what is the difference? A lot as it turns out.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum and contains several carcinogen compounds which many environmental agencies have branded paraffin candles as toxic. The reason paraffin wax is used in candle production is that it is very cheap and is very good at carrying fragrance, meaning that scented candles are much stronger so less oil can be used which ultimately results in a much cheaper production.

Paraffin wax candles also produce soot, which can leave black marks on your walls and home furnishings and since soot particles are very small, they can potentially penetrate the deepest area of the lung. In young children they can deposit up their nostrils and they can inhale the toxic fumes which I found shocking, as I regularly burn candles in the home where my three young children are.

Soy Wax

Soy wax, however, is a completely natural alternative wax that is sustainably sourced. Farmers have a rapidly growing market for producing soya beans that are then used to produce soy wax. This enables Mind Retreat candles to be completely natural and clean burning, as well as carcinogen free. Soy wax still maintains an excellent scent throw. There are some downsides to using a natural wax in candle making, such as the wax’s ability to completely seal itself to the jar. As there are no additives or adhesives in any Mind Retreat Candles, the wax can expand and shrink depending on room temperature. This would most likely go unnoticed to a candle loving consumer, however to a candle maker who strives to produce a perfect product it can be frustrating.

Mind Retreat Soy Wax Candles

A Mind Retreat soy wax candle or tea light will burn completely clean in your home or around children or pregnant mothers. There is no residue, no soot and absolutely zero toxins released into the air. So next time you are choosing a candle, especially as a gift or for your own home, consider the health benefits of paying a little bit more for a scented candle. In the case of a scented candle, you 100% get what you pay for. If you live with others and in a world of on trend grey carpets and white walls, soot residue is the last thing you need in your home.
